My happy

It was one of those days when I woke up feeling incapable of achieving the great, big dreams I had erected for myself; inefficient in accomplishing even the menial tasks laid right before me; and disorganized in the many aspects of my life that I should have been carefully managing well, as they immensely render consequences that may or may not fit well in my ideation of my future.

I did not have to force myself to fake a smile, however, as the natural upward curve of my mouth came casually.

Sometimes, all you need are words of affirmation to remind you of who you really are and what you are capable of doing.

An excerpt from my conversation with Nigel, my good friend, earlier this morning, after I lamented about how I was feeling like I mess:

“I like how you can smile at the most trivial of things. How easily it seems for you to switch to your bubbly mode.

“And it’s amazing how much love you have for cats.

“And how you value life so much so that you give an abundance of kindness to everyone and everything around you.

“And your dreams are rather fascinating. Made more so by the difficulty of attaining them.

“But Cherry, here’s the thing.

“It’s okay to be a mess.

“It’s okay to break down every once in a while.

“You’ll get better. It’s okay. Things will be better.

“And I’m here. I’ll be here to help you.

“I know you’re afraid but we still have so much more to give to this life. Don’t fret.”

And...

“Cherry, we can’t improve in just a day. I get it. I know you feel like you’re squandering life away and that somehow you’re being comfortable with that. Take a step backward. Slow down... Cherry, just hold on.”

Later in the day, I also received an unexpected message from Alyssa, who was my fellow editor in the university publication back in 2012. Her message reads:

“Hello, dear Cherry. We may not have talked for quite some time but always remember that I have always looked up to you because you are a very determined and spiritual person. Intellectual yet kind, reserved but open. :) For the times that we have worked together, I always knew that you were reliable and committed, and excellence-driven. And I know you wouldn’t have it any other way. I do hope that everything is well, be it family, friends, health or career.”

Simple things like these never fail to bring my heart joy.

Thank you, Nigel and Alyssa. Those words somehow validated the worth I once saw in myself, that which I lost along the way but am working hard to get back.

So, now, I am chasing my happy. Thank you. More please?
