Passengers on a ride

If life is “just a ride”, then it is safe to say that we are all passengers.

Some of us take the wheel, while others opt to sit by the windows and aisles. Great sights abound along the journey. We meet strangers-turned-friends in stopovers, leave them eventually but forever cherish the memories together. Dead ends and detours challenge us to keep going toward our destination, just as fork roads confuse us with which path to take.

Surely, we come up with different realizations as we go along our journey, but the commonality of our experiences makes all of us, in a way, one.

This is exactly what I like about Michael Rosenberg and his music. The beauty of his words and melody connects us to humanity and to delicate hearts.

Rosenberg was the vocalist and songwriter of the band Passenger, which was dissolved in 2009, and as he went solo in the music scene, he opted to continue using the band’s name.

We know Passenger prominently for the song “Let Her Go”, which we all can relate to. We all take some things for granted, thinking that they will always be just around the corner, only to find out that we are on the brink of losing just what have been so important to us.

Listening to two more of his songs, I could not help but admire Rosenberg for his writing skills that deeply cuts through the hidden facets of us.

Whispers — Passenger

Well, I’ve got open eyes,
And an open door,
But I don’t know what I’m searching for.
I should know by now.

Well, I’ve a big old heart,
This I know for sure,
But I don’t know what my love is for.
I should know by now.

The Wrong Direction — Passenger

I’d love to feel love but I can’t stand the rejection
I hide behind my jokes as a form of protection
I thought I was close but under further inspection
It seems I’ve been running in the wrong direction
